SpaceX's Launch Vehicle Falcon Heavy Sent into Space for the Fourth Time

18 Nov 2022

The day of November 1st in the year 2022 would be marked as one of the most important dates in the history of heavy lift launch vehicles since SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, successfully launched its fourth Falcon Heavy rocket into space.

The mission took its pace at 9:41 a.m. ET from a launchpad at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This heavy payload launch vehicle is the fourth launch of the company after a gap of 3 years. The first launch took place in 2018.

The ongoing commercial innovations across the space and satellite industry have enhanced tracking, space data collection, fusion, launch vehicle design, analytics, and space weather for medium-and heavy-lift launch vehicles.

The current space safety regime and the safety of flight products are comprehensive, timely, accurate, and highly available.

In correspondence to this, SpaceX’s rocket carried the USSF-44 mission for the U.S. space force Falcon Heavy to be the first operational national security mission.

Here’s the complete story.

What was the idea behind Falcon Heavy?

Falcon Heavy is the largest rocket in space after the Saturn V booster, a product of NASA used for moon missions in 1970. This heavy-lift launch vehicle has been constructed by three Falcon 9s that are concerted together side-by-side and hold the ability to launch about 64 tonnes into low Earth orbit.

Falcon 9 is a partially re-useable, medium-lift launch vehicle that was manufactured to carry cargo and humans into Earth’s orbit along with International Space Station (ISS). Among the medium-and heavy-lift launch vehicles, Falcon 9 had the most launches as of September 2022.

After this huge success of Falcon 9, scientists at SpaceX took the initiative to go further beyond and made Falcon Heavy to create history. According to SpaceX, Falcon Heavy has the capacity to lift a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage, and fuel into orbit.

Is Falcon Heavy the most powerful rocket among medium and heavy-lift launch vehicles?

According to Elon Musk, following the Delta IV Heavy, Falcon Heavy rocket is the world’s most powerful rocket but keeps the cost at one-third of Delta IV Heavy.

Since NASA’s Saturn 5, which was retired in 1973, Falcon Heavy has had the highest lift capacity of any space vehicle currently. It is composed of three Falcon 9, which have the power of 27 Merlin engines together to generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust at lift-off.

This power is equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft, thereby making Falcon Heavy the most powerful operational rocket in the world.

This heavy-lift launch vehicle sets long track records of responsible operations in space while counting on a safe environment to undertake ongoing and future space business in the commercial satellite industry.

What are medium and heavy-lift launch vehicles?

A launch vehicle is referred to as a space flight carrying a payload from Earth’s surface to outer space. These launch vehicles are often operated with extensive infrastructures such as fueling systems, launch pads, range safety, and vehicle assembly.

A medium-lift launch vehicle holds the capability of carrying a payload between 2,200 to 20,000 kg into Earth’s orbit. A heavy-lift launch vehicle has the capability of carrying a payload between 20,000 to 50,000 kg into Earth’s orbit.

With the increasing space budgets of countries across the globe, the growth in the global medium-and heavy-lift launch vehicle market is expected to increase soon.

According to a report by BIS Research, the global medium and heavy-lift launch vehicle market is estimated to reach $9.75 billion in 2032 from $6.45 billion in 2021, at a CAGR of 3.90% during the forecast period 2022-2032.

With Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy, SpaceX has made a successful entrance into the global medium and heavy-lift launch vehicle market, focusing on serial production facilities to supply against growing demand for development timelines for medium and heavy-lift launch vehicles.

Conclusion

The space industry is accelerating the global medium and heavy lift launch vehicle market with a steadily growing number of satellite operations like Falcon Heavy. With the launch of Falcon Heavy, Elon Musk commented, “I had this image of this giant explosion on the pad, with wheels bouncing down the road and the logo landing somewhere with a thud. But fortunately, that’s not what happened; crazy things come true.”
